Interaction

  • Incompatibility with specific medications in solution
  • Enhances apparent half-life of paracetamol
  • Enhances iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract

Side Effects

  • Mega-doses may cause diarrhoea and abdominal bloating
  • Harmful iron over-absorption in certain types of anemia
  • Potential for hyperoxaluria and hyperuricosuria
  • Risk of fetal abortion in pregnant women taking more than 5 gm/day

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Reported safe in normal doses for pregnant women
  • Daily intake of 5 gm or more reported to have caused abortion
  • Safe to take during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Ingesting megadose during pregnancy resulted in scurvy in neonates
  • Contraindicated for patients with hyperoxaluria
  • Can lead to false positive reactions in certain analytical tests for glucose, uric acid, creatine, and occult blood
