Pharmacology

  • Vitamin C: Necessary for collagen formation and tissue repair
  • Vitamin C: Plays a role in oxidation/reduction reactions
  • Vitamin C: Plays a role in synthesis of catecholamines and steroids
  • Vitamin E: Protects red blood cells against hemolysis
  • Vitamin E: Has protective effects against free radicals on polyunsaturated fatty acids
  • Vitamin E: Prevents oxidation of vitamin A and C

Dosage & Administration

  • One tablet or capsule daily
  • As directed by a physician

Interaction

  • Vitamin C: Deferroxamine, hormonal contraceptives, flufenazine, warfarin, elemental iron, salicylates
  • Vitamin C: Fluphenazine, disulfiram, mexiletine, vitamin B12
  • Vitamin E: Colestyramine, colestipol, and orlistat may interfere with vitamin E absorption
  • Vitamin E: High doses may potentiate the anticoagulant action of warfarin
  • Vitamin E: Large doses may impair response to iron supplementation.

Contraindications

  • Patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients

Side Effects

  • Diarrhea may occasionally occur during treatment with beta carotene
  • Skin may assume a slightly yellow discoloration
  • The side-effects of vitamin A are reversible
  • Vitamin C and vitamin E may cause diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disturbances

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category A
  • Adequate and well-controlled human studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Hypervitaminosis
  • Avoid use in early pregnancy
  • Patients on anticoagulant therapy should not use ascorbic acid for a prolonged period of time
