Indications

• Prevention of coronary heart diseases
• Prevention of certain types of cancer
• Anti-aging effects
• Protection against free radical damage caused by exercise
• Protection against free radical damage caused by illness

Pharmacology

• Beta carotene is converted to vitamin A when required
• Vitamin C deficiency produces scurvy
• Vitamin E acts as a defense against oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation

Dosage & Administration

• Oral administration
• Adult dose: 1 tablet daily

Interaction

• Decreased absorption of β carotene by Cholestyramine, Colestipol, Neomycin
• Reduced circulating vitamin C levels by oral contraceptives containing estrogen, Tetracycline, and Aspirin
• Enhanced anticoagulant activity of vitamin E with anticoagulant drugs
• Impaired intestinal absorption of vitamins A and K by high doses of vitamin E

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to any of its components

Side Effects

• Hypercarotenosis with routine large ingestion of carotenoids
• Gastrointestinal tract upset and renal stone formation with larger doses of vitamin C
• Diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, reduced resistance to bacterial infection with doses over 800mg of vitamin E

Pregnancy & Lactation

• No teratogenic effects in humans
• Caution in prescribing to pregnant women

Precautions & Warnings

• Caution for heavy smokers and alcoholics with β carotene
• Caution for patients with hyperoxaluria with vitamin C
• Caution for patients taking anticoagulant drugs with vitamin E
