Pharmacology
- Beta carotene converted to vitamin A when required
- Retinol functions on retina, growth, tissue differentiation, and immunological response
- Vitamin C is a powerful reducing agent
- Vitamin C is a cofactor in numerous biological processes
- Vitamin C essential for the conversion of proline to hydroxyproline and dopamine to noradrenaline
- Vitamin E acts as a defense against oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet is administered orally
- Adult dose is 1 tablet daily or as prescribed by physician
Interaction
- Cholestyramine and Colestipol cause decreased absorption of β carotene
- Certain oral contraceptives and drugs reduce circulating vitamin C levels
- Vitamin E may enhance the anticoagulant activity of anticoagulant drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the components
Side Effects
- β carotene can cause hypercarotenosis at high and prolonged exposure
- Large doses of Vitamin C may lead to gastrointestinal tract upset and renal stone formation
- High doses of Vitamin E may cause diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and reduced resistance to bacterial infection
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No teratogenic effects observed in humans
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised for heavy smokers and alcoholics with β carotene
- Caution with hyperoxaluria for Vitamin C
- Caution for patients taking anticoagulant drugs with Vitamin E
