Pharmacology

  • Beta carotene is converted to vitamin A (Retinol)
  • Vitamin C is a powerful reducing agent

Dosage & Administration

The adult dose is 1 tablet daily or as prescribed by the physician

Interactions

  • Cholestyramine, Colestipol, Neomycin decrease absorption of β carotene
  • Oral contraceptives containing Oestrogen, Tetracycline, and Aspirin reduce circulating vitamin C levels
  • Vitamin E may enhance the anticoagulant activity of anticoagulant drugs
  • High doses of vitamin E can impair intestinal absorption of vitamins A and K

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any of its components

Side Effects

  • Hypercarotenosis from large ingestions of β carotene
  • Gastrointestinal tract upset and renal stone formation from high doses of Vitamin C
  • Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fatigue, reduced resistance to bacterial infection, and transiently raised blood pressure from doses over 800 mg of Vitamin E

Pregnancy & Lactation

No teratogenic effects in humans, caution should be taken in prescribing to pregnant women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in heavy smokers and alcoholics for β carotene
  • Caution for patients with hyperoxaluria for Vitamin C
  • Caution in patients taking anticoagulant drugs for Vitamin E
