Pharmacology
- Beta carotene is converted to vitamin A (Retinol) when required
- Vitamin A has biochemical functions on retina, growth, tissue differentiation, and immunological response
- Beta carotene has anti-cancer activity
- Vitamin C is a powerful reducing agent in living tissues
- Vitamin C deficiency produces scurvy
- Vitamin C is a cofactor in numerous biological processes
- Vitamin C and molecular oxygen are essential for the conversion of proline to hydroxyproline
- Vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of adrenal steroid hormones
- Vitamin E defends against oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation
Dosage & Administration
- Administered orally
- Adult dose is 1 tablet daily or as prescribed by physician
Interaction
- Cholestyramine, Colestipol, Neomycin cause decreased absorption of β carotene
- Circulating vitamin C levels reduced during prolonged administration of certain oral contraceptives
- Vitamin E may enhance the anticoagulant activity of anticoagulant drugs
- High doses of vitamin E can impair intestinal absorption of vitamins A and K
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of its components
Side Effects
- Large amounts of carotenoids can cause hypercarotenosis
- Vitamin C in larger doses may lead to gastrointestinal tract upset and renal stone formation
- Large doses of vitamin E may cause diarrhea, abdominal pain or cramps, fatigue, reduced resistance to bacterial infection, and transiently raised blood pressure
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No teratogenic effects in humans
- Caution should be taken in prescribing to pregnant women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution should be exercised in heavy smokers and alcoholics when using β carotene
- Caution should be exercised when giving vitamin C to patients with hyperoxaluria
- Vitamin E should be used with caution in patients taking anticoagulant drugs
