Calac 300 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Treats calcium deficiency in growing children, lactating and pregnant mothers
• Removes symptoms associated with hypocalcemia such as paresthesia, muscle cramps, convulsion, mental changes

Pharmacology

• Supplements dietary calcium
• Neutralizes gastric acid in peptic ulcer disease
• Sequesters phosphorus in the intestine to reduce total body phosphate accumulation in chronic renal failure

Dosage & Administration

• Adults including elderly: 1-2 tablets (300 mg-600 mg) daily
• Children over 3 years: 1 tablet (300 mg) daily
• Pregnant women: 3-4 tablets (900-1200 mg) daily during third trimester and lactation

Interaction

• May reduce efficacy of calcium-channel blockers
• Concurrent admin with IV calcium salt and cardiac glycosides may lead to serious adverse events
• Increased risk of hypercalcaemia when used with thiazide diuretics
• May reduce absorption of tetracycline, alendronate, atenolol, iron, quinolone antibiotics, sodium fluoride, and zinc

Contraindications

• Contraindicated to patient of hypercalcemia associated with sarcoidosis and bone metastasis of neoplastic process

Side Effects

• May cause gastrointestinal irritation and constipation (rare)

Precautions & Warnings

• Cautiously used in patients with impaired renal function, cardiac disease, or sarcoidosis
