Pharmacology
- Anticholinergic drug
- Reduces the effect of acetylcholine
- Direct relaxing effect on smooth muscle
- Inhibits gastrointestinal propulsive motility
- Decreases gastric acid secretion
- Controls excessive pharyngeal, tracheal and bronchial secretions
Dosage & Administration
Average adult dosage is 10 mg (2 tablets) 4 times daily for several days. Dosage may be reduced depending on patient's response or as directed by the physician.
Interaction
Reduced gastric motility interferes with absorption of other drugs. Effects potentiated by other antimuscarinics including amantadine, some antihistamines, phenothiazines and TCA.
Contraindications
- Glaucoma
- Obstructive uropathy
- Obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal tract
- Intestinal atony of the elderly or debilitated patient
- Unstable cardiovascular status in acute hemorrhage
- Severe ulcerative colitis
- Toxic megacolon
- Complicating ulcerative colitis
- Myasthenia gravis
- Hypersensitivity

- Dryness of mouth
- Headache
- Palpitations

Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus.

Overdose Effects
Treatment is the same as for atropine overdosage.
