Indications
- Treatment of calcium deficiency
- Relief of symptoms associated with hypocalcemia
Pharmacology
- Supplements dietary calcium
- Neutralizes gastric acid in peptic ulcer disease
- Sequesters phosphorus in the intestine
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1-2 tablets (300 mg-600 mg) daily
- Children dosage: 1 tablet (300 mg) daily
- Pregnant women dosage: 3-4 tablets (900-1200 mg) daily
Interaction
- May reduce efficacy of calcium-channel blockers
- Serious adverse events with concurrent administration of IV calcium salt with cardiac glycosides
- Increased risk of hypercalcemia when used with thiazide diuretics
- May reduce absorption of tetracycline, alendronate, atenolol, iron, quinolone antibiotics, sodium fluoride, and zinc
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia associated with sarcoidosis
- Bone metastasis of neoplastic process

- Gastrointestinal irritation
- Constipation
