Indications
- Treatment of calcium deficiency in children, lactating and pregnant mothers
- Relief of symptoms associated with hypocalcemia
- Management of paresthesia, muscle cramps, tetany, convulsions, and dermatitis
Pharmacology
- Supplements dietary calcium
- Neutralizes gastric acid in peptic ulcer disease
- Sequesters phosphorus in the intestine to reduce body phosphate accumulation
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1-2 tablets (300 mg-600 mg) daily
- Children over 3 years: 1 tablet (300 mg) daily
- Pregnant women dosage: 3-4 tablets (900-1200 mg) daily during the third trimester and lactation
Interaction
- May reduce efficacy of calcium-channel blockers
- Potential adverse events with concurrent administration of IV calcium salt and cardiac glycosides
- Increased risk of hypercalcemia when used with thiazide diuretics
- Reduced absorption of tetracycline, alendronate, atenolol, iron, quinolone antibiotics, sodium fluoride, and zinc
Contraindications
- Patients with hypercalcemia associated with sarcoidosis and bone metastasis of neoplastic process
Side Effects
- Rare gastrointestinal irritation and constipation

- Caution in patients with impaired renal function, cardiac disease, or sarcoidosis
