Indications
- Treatment of calcium deficiency in growing children
- Treatment of calcium deficiency in lactating and pregnant mothers
- Relief of symptoms associated with hypocalcemia
- Relief of paresthesia
- Relief of carpopedal spasm
- Relief of muscle cramps
- Reduction of muscle excitability leading to tetany
- Prevention and relief of convulsions
- Management of mental changes associated with hypocalcemia

Pharmacology
- Supplementation of dietary calcium
- Neutralization of gastric acid in peptic ulcer disease
- Sequestering of phosphorus in the intestine to reduce total body phosphate accumulation in chronic renal failure
- Reduction of serum phosphate concentration
- Deposition of calcium phosphate in bone and soft tissue
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1-2 tablets (300 mg-600 mg) daily
- Children over 3 years dosage: 1 tablet (300 mg) daily
- Pregnant women dosage: 3-4 tablets (900-1200 mg) daily during third trimester and lactation
Interaction
- Potential reduction of efficacy of calcium-channel blockers
- Risk of serious adverse events with concurrent administration of IV calcium salt and cardiac glycosides
- Increased risk of hypercalcemia when used with thiazide diuretics
- Potential reduction in absorption of tetracycline, alendronate, atenolol, iron, quinolone antibiotics, sodium fluoride, and zinc
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with hypercalcemia associated with sarcoidosis
- Not to be used in patients with bone metastasis of neoplastic process

- Rare gastrointestinal irritation
