G-Calcium Gluconate 500 mg/5 ml (IM/IV Injection)

Indications

• Treatment of G-Calcium Gluconate deficiency states
• Dietary supplement for Calcium Gluconate deficiency
• Severe hypoglycemic tetany
• Hypopara thyroidism
• Vitamin D-deficiency
• Osteoporosis
• Extreme hypercalcemia

Pharmacology

• Prevention or treatment of negative calcium balance
• Facilitates nerve and muscle performance
• Supports normal cardiac function

Dosage & Administration

• 1-2 ampoules of Ca+ Gluconate IM daily or every alternate day
• Children require 1/2 of adult dose
• LM injection should be given deep to gluteus medius muscle using a long needle
• Route not recommended for children
• Acute hypocalcemia dosage: 10-20 ml (2.32-4.64 mmol)/Kg
• Body weight Fluoride or lead poisoning dosage: 0.3 ml/Kg
• Neonatal tetany dosage: 0.3 (0.7 mmol)/Kg body weight

Interaction

• Co-administration of high calcium doses with thiazide diuretics may result in milk-alkali syndrome and hypercalcemia
• Potentiates digoxin toxicity
• Decreases effects of calcium-channel blockers
• Enhanced absorption with calcitriol (a vitamin D metabolite)

Contraindications

• Patients receiving cardiac glycosides
• Patients with renal failure
• Patients with severe hypercalciuria
• Patients with hypercalcemia

Side Effects

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Hot flushes
• Sweating
• Hypotension
• Vasomotor collapse

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category C
• Potential benefit justifying the potential risk to the fetus
