Description
- Used to treat or prevent calcium depletion
- Indicated for hyperacidity and for fast relief of acid indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach and upset stomach

Indications
- Treatment or prevention of calcium depletion
- Conditions associated with calcium deficiency including hypoparathyroidism, achlorhydria, chronic diarrhea, vitamin D deficiency, steatorrhea, sprue, pregnancy and lactation, menopause, pancreatitis, renal failure, alkalosis, and hyperphosphataemia
- Management of conditions associated with hyperacidity
- Fast relief of acid indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach, and upset stomach
Pharmacological Reaction
- Calcium carbonate reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended doses for adults and children
- Tailored dosage for specific diseases such as calcium deficiency, malabsorption, or parathyroid function
- Different doses for pregnancy, lactation, and chronic renal failure
- Maximum effective phosphate binding when given with meals
- Relief of symptoms with 1000 mg tablet, may be repeated hourly if needed or as directed by the physician
Interaction
- Enhancement of cardiac effects of digoxin and other cardiac glycosides when hypercalcaemia occurs
- Interference with the absorption of tetracycline preparations
- Modification of vitamin D therapy in chronic renal failure
Contraindications
- Hypercalcaemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
- Cautious use in patients with sarcoidosis, renal or cardiac disease, and those receiving cardiac glycosides
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal irritation
- Constipation
- Rarely produced hypercalcaemia in chronic renal failure patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Widely used in pregnancy for oral calcium supplementation or antacid therapy
- Can be used in lactating women
Use in Special Populations
- Safe and effective in children with chronic renal failure
- Constipation may be troublesome in elderly patients with renal failure, necessitating monitoring of serum calcium and phosphate levels
