Description

Dosage & Administration
- Available in 250mg, 500mg, and 1000mg tablets
- Recommended doses for adults range from 540-2000mg per day
- Doses for children are half of those for adults
- In pregnancy and lactation, the recommended daily dose of calcium is 1200-1500mg
Pharmacology
- Calcium carbonate reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water.
Interaction
- May interfere with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations
Contraindications
- Hypercalcaemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Side Effects
- Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the GI tract
- May cause constipation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Calcium Carbonate can be used in lactating women
