Description
Med Cal is a calcium carbonate tablet used for the treatment or prevention of calcium depletion. It is indicated for various conditions associated with calcium deficiency, hyperacidity, and for fast relief of acid indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach, and upset stomach. The product reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water, increasing gastric pH and diminishing the activity of pepsin in the gastric secretion. Dosage and administration vary based on tablet strength and patient characteristics. The product can enhance the cardiac effects of digoxin, interfere with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations, and may require modification of vitamin D therapy in chronic renal failure. It is contraindicated in several conditions and caution should be exercised in certain patient populations. The product may cause GI irritation, constipation, and rarely, hypercalcaemia.
