Description
- Used for the treatment of calcium depletion
- For prevention of osteoporosis
- Fast relief of acid indigestion
- Management of hyperacidity
- Safe for use in pregnancy and lactation
- Studied for use in children and infants with chronic renal failure
Dosage & Administration
- Available in 250 mg, 500 mg, and 1000 mg tablets
- Adult dose: 540-2000 mg Calcium Carbonate per day
- Children's dose: half of adult dose
- Pregnancy and lactation dose: 1200-1500 mg calcium per day
- Chronic renal failure dose: 2.5-9.0 gm Calcium Carbonate per day
Mode of Action
- Reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water
- Increases gastric pH, diminishing pepsin activity
- Up to 30% oral calcium load may be absorbed
Interaction
- May enhance cardiac effects of digoxin
- May interfere with absorption of tetracycline preparations
- Modification of vitamin D therapy may be required in chronic renal failure
Contraindications
- Hypercalcaemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- May be irritating to the GI tract
- May cause constipation
- Rarely produces hypercalcaemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Widely used in pregnancy by way of oral calcium supplementation or antacid therapy
- Safe for use in lactating women
Use in Special Populations
- Safe and effective in children and infants with chronic renal failure
- Constipation may be troublesome in elderly patients with renal failure
