Indications

Pharmacology
- Reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water
- Increases gastric pH to diminish pepsin activity
- Up to 30% oral calcium load absorption
Recommended Dosage
- Adults: 540-2000 mg Calcium Carbonate per day
- Children: half of adult doses
- Pregnancy and lactation: 1200-1500 mg calcium per day
- Chronic renal failure: 2.5-9.0 gm Calcium Carbonate per day
Interaction
- Enhances cardiac effects of digoxin
- Interferes with absorption of tetracycline preparations
- Modifies vitamin D therapy in chronic renal failure
Contraindications
- Hypercalcaemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- GI tract irritation
- Constipation
- Rarely produces hypercalcaemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Widely used in pregnancy for oral calcium supplementation or antacid therapy
- Can be used in lactating women
Use in Special Populations
- Safe and effective in children with chronic renal failure
- Constipation may be troublesome for elderly patients with renal failure
