Indications
- Treatment or prevention of calcium depletion
- Conditions associated with calcium deficiency
- Management of conditions associated with hyperacidity

Pharmacology
- Reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water
- Increases gastric pH diminishing the activity of pepsin in gastric secretion
- Up to 30% oral calcium load may be absorbed

Interaction

Contraindications
- Hypercalcaemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- Irritation to the GI tract
- Constipation
- Rarely produces hypercalcaemia
- May occur with large doses in chronic renal failure

- Widely used in pregnancy for oral calcium supplementation or antacid therapy
