Name and Dosage

Indications
- Treatment or prevention of calcium depletion
- Fast relief of acid indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach and upset stomach
Pharmacology
Reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water
Mode of Action
Increases gastric pH, diminishing pepsin activity, and allows for absorption of oral calcium load
Dosage and Administration
- Recommended doses for adults and children
- Utilization as an antacid and dietary supplement
Interactions
- Enhancement of cardiac effects of digoxin and other cardiac glycosides
- Interference with the absorption of tetracycline preparations
Contraindications
- Hypercalcaemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
- Cautious use in patients with sarcoidosis, renal or cardiac disease
Side Effects
- Irritation to the GI tract
- Constipation
- Rarely produced hypercalcaemia with large doses in chronic renal failure patients

Widely used in pregnancy and lactation for oral calcium supplementation or antacid therapy

- Extensively studied in children and infants with chronic renal failure
- Constipation is troublesome for elderly patients with renal failure
