Pharmacology
- Calcium carbonate reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water, increasing gastric pH and diminishing pepsin activity.
RecommendedDoses
- Adult dose: 540-2000 mg/day
- Children's dose: half of the adult dose
- Pregnancy & lactation dose: 1200-1500 mg/day
- Chronic renal failure dose: 2.5-9.0 gm/day
InteractionWithDrugs
- Enhances cardiac effects of digoxin
- Interferes with absorption of tetracycline preparations
- May require modification of vitamin D therapy in chronic renal failure
Contraindications
- Hypercalcaemia
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria
- Nephrolithiasis
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
