Indications
- Treatment or prevention of calcium depletion
- Management of conditions associated with hyperacidity
- Fast relief of acid indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach, upset stomach
Pharmacology
- Reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water
- Increases gastric pH and diminishes pepsin activity
- Up to 30% of oral calcium load may be absorbed
DosageInstructions
- Adult doses equivalent to 540-2000 mg Calcium Carbonate per day
- Children doses half of those for adults
- Pregnancy and lactation recommended daily dose of calcium is 1200-1500 mg
- Chronic renal failure doses vary from 2.5-9.0 gm Calcium Carbonate per day and need to be adjusted
Interaction
- May enhance cardiac effects of digoxin and other cardiac glycosides
- May interfere with absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations
- Modification of vitamin D therapy may be required in chronic renal failure
Contraindications
- Hypercalcaemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
- Cautious use in patients with sarcoidosis, renal or cardiac disease, and in patients receiving cardiac glycosides

- Rarely hypercalcaemia in chronic renal failure patients
