Indications
- Used to prevent or treat low blood calcium levels
- Used in conditions like osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, latent tetany, postmenopausal osteoporosis, etc.
Pharmacology
- Contains Calcium Orotate with orotic acid for calcium transport through cellular membranes
- Assists in the maintenance of healthy cartilage
- Involved in the synthesis of DNA and RNA
Dosage & Administration
- Calcium Orotate 400 mg: 2-3 tablets as an addition to the daily diet
- Calcium Orotate 740 mg: 1-2 tablets as an addition to the daily diet
Interaction
- Can decrease absorption of certain drugs like biphosphonates, quinolone antibiotics, tetracycline antibiotics, levothyroxine, phenytoin, tiludronate disodium, etc.
- Thiazide-type diuretics can interact with IntraCal supplements, increasing the risks of hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in conditions like incomplete or infrequent bowel movements, kidney stone, kidney disease, increased activity of the parathyroid gland, high amount of calcium in urine, etc.
Side Effects
- Common side effects include bloating and swelling in the abdomen
- Other side effects may include loss of appetite, upset stomach, constipation, nausea, vomiting, etc.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnant and breast-feeding women may need more calcium
- Taking Calcium Orotate can help reduce the risk of pregnancy-related high blood pressure
Precautions & Warnings
- Precaution is needed if the patient is allergic to IntraCal
- Precaution needed in kidney disease, kidney stones, little or no stomach acid, heart disease, etc.
