Description
- Treatment and prevention of Osteoporosis, Osteomalacia, Tetany, Hypoparathyroidism, Disorders of osteogenesis
- Supplement for inadequate intake of Calcium in childhood diet, rickets, pregnancy, lactation, and elderly patients
- Also used for pancreatitis, phosphate binder in chronic renal failure
Composition
- Each tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU
- Each DX tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU
- Each effervescent tablet contains Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP
Pharmacology
- Adequate Calcium in the blood is vital for bodily functions
- Vitamin D aids in Calcium absorption and bone formation
- Coral Calcium sourced for better absorption
- Vitamin D3 aids in maintaining Calcium balance
Dosage
- One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water, dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water to drink orally
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Ion exchange resins and laxatives may reduce vitamin D absorption
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with tetracycline absorption
- Hypercalcaemia may increase cardiac glycosides toxicity
- Bisphosphonate or sodium fluoride intake affects calcium tablet absorption
- Oxalic acid and phytic acid inhibit calcium absorption
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, hypersensitivity to the component, severe renal insufficiencies, concomitant digoxin therapy
Side effects
- Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may cause irritation and constipation
- Rarely causes hypercalcemia and allergic reactions
- May lead to irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, and drowsiness
Pregnancy and lactation
- Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
- Overdoses should be avoided during pregnancy to prevent hypercalcaemia
- No indications of Vitamin D teratogenicity in humans, can be used during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions and warnings
- Monitor serum calcium levels and renal function during long-term treatment
- Caution in elderly patients on concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides or diuretics
- Renal impairment should be considered when using Vitamin D
- Prescribe with caution to patients suffering from sarcoidosis
- Caution in immobilised patients with osteoporosis
Overdose effects
- Can lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia
- Symptoms include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, and mental disturbances
- May lead to renal damage and soft tissue calcification
- Treatment involves discontinuation of calcium and other specific measures based on severity
