Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 film-coated tablet twice daily
- Best taken with or just after main meals with a full glass of water
- Children 3-7 years: 1 effervescent tablet daily
- Children 7 years and older: 1 to 2 effervescent tablets daily
Interaction
- Risk of hypercalcemia with thiazide diuretics
- Considerations for hypocalcaemia in digitalized patients
- Effect of certain foods on calcium absorption
- Concomitant treatment with phenytoin or barbiturates
- Concomitant use of glucocorticoids
- Attenuated effects of digitalis and other cardiac glycosides
- Reduction of absorption of thyroxin, bisphosphonates, sodium fluoride, quinolone, tetracycline antibiotics, and iron by calcium salts
Contraindications
- Absolute contraindications: hypercalcaemia, sarcoidosis, primary hyperparathyroidism, Vitamin-D3 overdosage, severe renal failure
- Relative contraindications: osteoporosis due to prolonged immobilization, renal stones, severe hypercalciuria
Side Effects
- Mild gastrointestinal disturbances
- Occasional skin rash
- Hypercalciuria and rare cases of hypercalcaemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Increased requirements for calcium and Vitamin-D3 during pregnancy and lactation
- Caution with the administration of calcium and iron supplements
Precautions & Warnings
- Supervision for patients with mild to moderate renal failure or mild hypercalciuria
- Periodic checks of plasma calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion
- Monitoring of serum and urinary calcium levels and kidney function with long term treatment
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, loss of appetite, metallic taste, stomach cramps, diarrhea, headache, and constipation
