Composition
- 50% solution of Magnesium Sulphate heptahydrate BP (Mg^2+ approx. 2 mmol/ml), total 2.47gm per 5 ml ampoule
- 4% solution of Magnesium Sulphate heptahydrate BP (Mg^2+ approx. 0.16 mmol/ml), total 4 gm per 100 ml bottle of infusion
Description
- Given initially by intravenous infusion or intramuscular injection
- Used in the prevention or control of seizures associated with acute uremia, hypothyroidism, and eclampsia
- Recommended for emergency treatment of serious arrhythmias
- May aid in the treatment of severe asthma
- Used for hypomagnesaemia and its associated conditions

- Common: hypermagnesaemia symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, flushing, thirst, hypotension, drowsiness, confusion, muscle weakness
- Rare: diarrhea or skin irritation after soaking
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- Caution required during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with caution to patients with impaired renal function or receiving digitalis glycosides
- Parenteral administration may enhance the effect of neuromuscular blocking agents or central nervous system depressants
Overdose Effects
- Respiratory depression, loss of deep tendon reflexes, nausea, vomiting, flushing, thirst, hypotension, drowsiness, confusion, slurred speech, double vision, bradycardia, muscle weakness
