Description
- Injection for the treatment of hypomagnesaemia and magnesium deficiency states
- Indicated for irregular heart beats and as a laxative

- Also used in bronchial asthma and cardiovascular disorder
Composition
- Each 5 ml ampoule contains 50% solution of Magnesium sulphate heptahydrate BP total 2.47gm
- Each 100 ml bottle of infusion contains 4% solution of Magnesium sulphate heptahydrate BP total 4 gm
Mode of action
- Essential constituent of many enzyme systems involved in energy generation
- Plays an important role in neurochemical transmission and muscular excitability
Dosage administration
- Adult dose: Intravenous and intramuscular administration for severe hypomagnesemia
- Usual pediatric dose for moderate to severe asthma in children and adolescents
Indication
- Treatment of hypomagnesaemia and magnesium deficiency states

Pharmacology
- Second most plentiful cation of intracellular fluids
- Essential for the activity of many enzyme systems
Interaction
- May cause a reduction in blood pressure when taken with Calcium channel blockers
- Increase in effects of neuromuscular blocking agents when given together
- Risk of respiratory depression when given with high-dose barbiturates, opioids, and aminoglycosides antibiotics
Contraindications
- Defect of the heart's electrical message pathways
- Severe damage to the muscular wall of the heart
- Significantly decreased kidney function
Side effects
- Common: Excessive administration leads to hypermagnesaemia
- Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, flushing, thirst, hypotension, drowsiness, confusion, muscle weakness
- Rare: Diarrhea, skin irritation after soaking
Pregnancy lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- Caution required when administered to pregnant women
- Not known whether excreted in human milk
Precautions warnings
- Administered with caution to patients with impaired renal function
- Monitor blood pressure, respiratory rate, and signs of overdose
Overdose effects
- Symptoms include respiratory depression, loss of deep tendon reflexes, nausea, vomiting, flushing, thirst, hypotension, drowsiness, confusion, slurred speech, muscle weakness
