Indications
- Treatment of viral infections due to Herpes simplex virus (type I & II) and Varicella zoster virus (herpes zoster & chicken pox)
- Treatment of Herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes including initial and recurrent genital herpes and herpes labialis
- Prophylaxis of Herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients
Pharmacology
- Synthetic purine derivative
- Interferes with DNA synthesis
- Inhibits viral replication
- Converted to Aciclovir Triphosphate
- Peak plasma concentrations occur within 1.5-2 hours after oral administration
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Excreted through the kidney
Dosage & Administration
- Different dosages for treatment of initial herpes simplex, immunocompromised patients, prevention of recurrence, prophylactic treatment in immunocompromised patients, treatment of chicken pox, treatment of herpes zoster, treatment of initial rectal herpes infections
- Doses should be adjusted for renal impairment
- Dosage recommendations for adults and children of different age groups
Interaction
- Probenecid reduces Aciclovir excretion and increases plasma concentration
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Aciclovir
