Description

Sterile aqueous solution of 7% amino acids IV infusion and 10% glucose with electrolytes

Pharmacology

  • Promotes protein synthesis
  • Reduces endogenous protein catabolism
  • Constitutes total parenteral nutrition (TPN)
  • Can be administered by peripheral vein with dextrose and maintenance electrolytes

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage based on nitrogen requirement
  • Slow intravenous infusion for adults
  • Maximal rate of infusion recommended for infants & children
  • Step-wise increase in the rate of administration for infants & children

Interaction

No pharmacological effect expected at recommended dosage

Contraindications

  • Inborn errors of amino acids metabolism
  • Severe liver damage
  • Severe uremia without dialysis facilities
  • Hyperosmolar nonketotic diabetic coma
  • Hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients

Side Effects

  • Rarely nausea
  • Vomiting, flushing, and sweating at higher infusion rates
  • Transient increases in liver test
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Thrombophlebitis with peripheral vein use

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Successful and safe administration reported during pregnancy
  • No animal reproduction studies carried out

Precautions & Warnings

  • Hyperphenylalaninemia in severely ill, premature infants
  • Caution in patients with diabetes mellitus or severe heart failure
  • Monitoring of phenylalanine level recommended for specific patients
  • Discard if solution is turbid or contains particles
