Indications
- Used in the treatment of carbohydrate and fluid depletions
- Replaces water deficiency
- Provides readily metabolizable nutrient
- Acts as a suitable vehicle for slow intravenous infusion of numerous drugs
Pharmacology
- Form of glucose (sugar)
- Injected into a vein through an IV to replace lost fluids
- Used to treat low blood sugar, insulin shock, or dehydration
- Given for nutritional support to patients unable to eat
- Provides carbohydrates to the body
Dosage
- Variable dose dependent on individual patient requirements
- Maximum rate of infusion for 5% dextrose solution is 0.5 g/kg/hour
- Laboratory findings should be available to proceed with subsequent fluid therapy
- Recommended flow rate for adult for 25% dextrose solution is 10-35 drops per minute

Contraindications

- Potential side effects include burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle, warmth, redness, or bleeding at the IV site, fever, cough, high blood sugar, headache, memory problems, weakness, fainting, shallow breathing, low potassium, anxiety, sweating, pale skin, shortness of breath, wheezing, pain, and fast or uneven heart rate
