Indications
- Administered in the treatment of carbohydrate and fluid depletions
- Used to replace water deficiency when there is no significant loss of electrolytes
- Provides a readily metabolizable nutrient
- Acts as a suitable vehicle for the slow intravenous infusion of numerous drugs
Pharmacology
- Dextrose is a form of glucose (sugar)
- Injected into a vein through an IV to replace lost fluids and provide carbohydrates to the body
- Used to treat low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), insulin shock, or dehydration (fluid loss)
- Given for nutritional support to patients unable to eat due to illness, injury, or medical condition
Dosage
- Variable dosage dependent on individual patient requirements
- Maximum rate of infusion for 5% dextrose solution is 0.5 g/kg/hour
- Different dosages for 5%, 10%, and 25% dextrose solutions based on clinical condition, age, and body surface area
- Oral powder dosage for adults and children
Administration
- Check infusion set and solution prior to use
- Insert the spike of the administration set to the Eurocap and fit the connector of the administration set firmly to the needle
- Start infusion while adjusting drip speed
Contraindications
- Do not use if allergic to dextrose
- Inform doctor of diabetes, breathing problems, electrolyte imbalance, kidney or liver disease, food or drug allergy, or regular blood transfusions
Side Effects
- Severe burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle
- Fever, ongoing cough
- High or low blood sugar
- Low potassium or anxiety
- Warmth, redness, oozing, or bleeding at the IV site
Pregnancy & Lactation
- FDA pregnancy category C
- Unknown effect on unborn baby or nursing baby
- Inform doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Carefully monitor serum glucose concentration
- Concurrent use of insulin may be needed for diabetic patients
- Do not use if solution is cloudy, contains particles, or past expiry date
