Indications
- Emergency treatment of shock
- Treatment of burns
- Management of hypoproteinemia with or without edema
Pharmacology
- Contribution to plasma colloid oncotic pressure
- Transport function for hormones, enzymes, medicines, and toxins
- Antioxidant properties
- Free radical scavenging
- Maintenance of capillary membrane integrity
Dosage & Administration
- For intravenous administration only
- Can be diluted with 5% glucose or 0.9% sodium chloride
- Concentration, dosage, and infusion rate should be adjusted to the patient’s individual requirements and indication
- Different dosage recommendations for various conditions such as hypovolemia, hypoalbuminemia, prevention of central volume fluid depletion after paracentesis
- Monitoring of haemodynamic performance and electrolyte levels
Interaction
- Avoid mixing with protein hydrolysates or alcoholic solutions
- Risk of atypical reactions to ACE inhibitors in patients undergoing therapeutic plasma exchange
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with severe anemia or cardiac failure
- Contraindicated in patients with a history of allergic reactions to human albumin
Side Effects
- Allergic or pyrogenic reactions characterized by fever, chills, rash, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, and hypotension
- Potential for vascular overload with resultant pulmonary edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C - potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
Precautions & Warnings
- Important in cases of hypertension or low cardiac reserve
- Additional fluids may be required for dehydrated patients
- Monitoring for signs of cardiac overload in injured or postoperative patients
- Potential risk of viral transmission
- Individualized volume administration and infusion rate
Use in Special Populations
- No established safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients
- Children may respond similarly to adults based on extensive experience
