Indications

  • Treatment of osteoporosis in women (specially postmenopausal)
  • Prevention of osteoporosis in women (specially postmenopausal)
  • Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in men

Pharmacology

  • Inhibition of bone resorption
  • Prevents experimentally induced bone destruction
  • Highly potent inhibitor of osteoclastic activity
  • Reduces bone resorption with no direct effect on bone formation

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dose of one 150 mg film-coated tablet once a month
  • Tablet should be taken 60 minutes before the first food or drink of the day
  • Tablet should be swallowed whole with a full glass of plain water

Interaction

  • Interference with the absorption by calcium supplements and antacids
  • No interaction potential with tamoxifen or hormone replacement therapy
  • Increase in bioavailability when co-administered with ranitidine

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to ibandronic acid or its excipients
  • Uncorrected hypocalcemia
  • Abnormalities of the esophagus delaying esophageal emptying
  • Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 60 minutes

  • Caution in patients with active upper gastrointestinal problems
  • Potential for severe esophageal adverse experiences
  • Risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw
  • Caution during concomitant medication with NSAIDs

Use in Special Populations

  • No dosage adjustment for patients with mild or moderate renal impairment
  • No dosage adjustment for patients with hepatic impairment
  • No dosage adjustment for the elderly
  • Safety and efficacy not established in patients less than 18 years old

Overdose Effects
