Indications

  • Treatment of osteoarthritis of knee, hip, spine, hand, and other locations
  • Beneficial in rheumatoid arthritis, sport injuries, migraine, psoriasis, atherosclerosis, kidney stones, ulcerative colitis, leaky gut syndrome

Pharmacology

  • Glucosamine as a natural amino-sugar
  • Building block for biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)
  • Formation of articular cartilage, ligaments, tendons, nails, and other connective tissues
  • Increase in Glucosamine level facilitates cartilage production and repair
  • Activation of chondrocytes in the cartilage to produce GAGs and proteoglycans
  • Chondroitin sulfate as a glycosaminoglycan found in connective tissue

Dosage & Administration

  • 250/200 mg tablet: 1-2 tablets, three times daily
  • Dosage may be adjusted according to the response and body weight
  • Typical dosage based on body weight: Under 54 Kg - 1000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 800 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day, 54 Kg to 91 Kg - 1500 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1200 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day, Over 91 Kg - 2000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1600 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day
  • 750/600 mg tablet: 1 tablet two times daily or as directed by the physician

Interaction

  • No significant drug interactions reported with various drug classes
  • Chondroitin may enhance the blood thinning effects of anticoagulants like Warfarin, Heparin

Contraindications

  • No known contraindications for Glucosamine and Chondroitin
  • Proven hypersensitivity to shellfish or sulfur is a contraindication

Side Effects

  • Safety studies show no demonstrable side effects
  • Rarely occurring side effects are almost like placebo

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for pregnant or potentially pregnant women
  • Not studied enough to determine effects on a developing fetus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Patients with Diabetes Mellitus advised to monitor blood glucose levels regularly
  • No special studies in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
  • Not recommended for children
  • Administration to patients with severe hepatic or renal insufficiency should be under medical supervision
