Indications

• Treatment of pain in osteoarthritis of the knee
• Adjuvant in orthopaedic surgery

Pharmacology

• Viscous solution
• High molecular weight fraction
• Purified natural sodium hyaluronate
• Buffered physiological sodium phosphate
• pH of 6.8-7.5
• Component of body's extracellular matrix
• High concentration in cartilage and synovial fluid
• Provides viscosity and elasticity to synovial fluid
• Fundamental for lubricating and shock absorbing properties
• Essential for correct structure of proteoglycans in articular cartilage
• Improves joint functions

Dosage

• Intra-articular injection
• Five injections in a treatment cycle
• Three injections for some patients
• 2 ml per knee
• Pediatrics: safety and effectiveness not demonstrated

Administration

• Single use, ready to use, sterile solution
• Supplied in a 2 ml pre-filled syringe
• Must not be diluted
• Sterile content, must be used immediately
• Requires precise anatomical localization into the joint cavity of the knee
• Strict aseptic precautions should be observed
• Joint effusion should be aspirated before injection
• Patient should rest the treated knee after injection

Interaction

• Should not be mixed with other products
• Should not be used concomitantly with disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium salts

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to hyaluronate preparations
• Past and present infections or skin diseases in the area of the injection site

Side Effects

• Pain at injection site
• Swelling/effusion at injection site
• Warmth or redness at injection site

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Safety and effectiveness not established in pregnant women
• Not known if excreted in human milk
• Safety and effectiveness not established in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Caution for patients allergic to avian proteins, feathers, and egg products
• Strict aseptic administration technique must be followed
• Patient should avoid strenuous activities or prolonged weight-bearing activities
