Indications
- Treatment of pain in osteoarthritis of the knee
- Adjuvant in orthopaedic surgery
Pharmacology
- Consists of high molecular weight fraction of purified natural sodium hyaluronate
- pH of 6.8-7.5
- Provides viscosity and elasticity to synovial fluid
- Improves joint functions in arthritic joints
Dosage
- Administered by intra-articular injection
- Treatment cycle consists of five injections given at weekly intervals
- Pediatrics use not demonstrated
Administration
- Supplied as a single-use, ready-to-use, sterile solution
- Must not be diluted
- Requires precise anatomical localization into the joint cavity of the knee
- Sterile disposable needle required for injection
Interaction
- Should not be administered simultaneously or mixed with other products
- Should not be used concomitantly with disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium salts
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to hyaluronate preparations
- Contraindicated in cases of past and present infections or skin diseases in the area of the injection site
Side Effects
- Local reactions such as pain, swelling/effusion, warmth, or redness at the injection site
- Transient symptoms that disappear spontaneously within a few days
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety and effectiveness not established in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk not known
- Safety and effectiveness not established in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution when injecting into patients allergic to avian proteins, feathers, and egg products
- Strict aseptic administration technique must be followed
- Patient advised to avoid strenuous activities or prolonged weight-bearing activities within 48 hours following injection
