Description
A dopamine antagonist medication used to treat symptoms such as dyspeptic symptom complex, acute nausea and vomiting, and Parkinson's disease. It also aids in speeding barium transit in follow-through radiological studies.
Form
Oral suspension
Dosage
- 10-20 mg for adults every 6-8 hours daily
- 2-4 ml/10 kg body weight for children every 6-8 hours daily
Administration
- Should be taken 15-30 minutes before meals
- Maximum daily dose for adults is 80 mg
- Suppositories for rectal administration
Pharmacology
Blocks dopamine receptors in the Chemoreceptor Trigger Zone and stomach, enhances gastrointestinal motility, gastric emptying, and esophageal peristalsis, and regulates pyloric contraction.
Interaction
- Antagonized by anticholinergic drugs
- Lowered oral bioavailability with antacids and antisecretory drugs
- Inhibited by CYP3A4 inhibitors

- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Neonates
- Gastrointestinal hemorrhage, obstruction, or perforation
- Prolactin-releasing pituitary tumor
