Sandostatin LAR 20 mg/vial (Injection)

Indications

• Reduce blood levels of growth hormone and IGF-I in acromegaly patients
• Symptomatic treatment of metastatic carcinoid tumors
• Treatment of profuse watery diarrhea associated with VIP-secreting tumors

Pharmacology

• Synthetic analogue of somatostatin
• Suppresses basal and stimulated secretion of growth hormone
• Reduces secretion of various hormones and peptides

Dosage & Administration

• Intramuscular administration for acromegaly
• Intravenous administration for variceal hemorrhage in patients with cirrhosis
• Subcutaneous administration for prophylaxis of complications following pancreatic surgery
• Different dosages for different conditions and age groups

Interaction

• Dosage adjustment with concurrent therapy may be necessary
• May increase concentration of bromocriptine

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity

Side Effects

• Local pain at site of injection
• Gastrointestinal effects such as anorexia, nausea, and bloating
• Metabolic effects including hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
• Cardiac and pancreatic effects

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Category B - no confirmed adverse effects in pregnant women

Precautions & Warnings

• Monitoring needed for renal disease, gall bladder disease, diabetes, and hypothyroidism
• Monitoring levels of vitamin B12 during long term therapy

Use in Special Populations

• Dosage adjustment needed in severe renal impairment requiring dialysis
