Indications
- Reduction of blood levels of growth hormone and IGF-I
- Symptomatic treatment of metastatic carcinoid tumors
- Treatment of profuse watery diarrhea associated with VIP-secreting tumors
Pharmacology
- Synthetic analogue of somatostatin
- Suppresses basal and stimulated secretion of growth hormone
- Reduces the secretion of various hormones and peptides
Dosage & Administration
- Intramuscular, Intravenous, Subcutaneous administration for different conditions and patient groups with varying dosage ranges
Interaction
- May require dosage adjustment with concurrent therapy such as calcium channel blockers, oral hypoglycemics, beta-blockers, and diuretics
- May increase concentration of bromocriptine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
Side Effects
- Local pain, stinging, tingling at injection site
- Gastrointestinal effects like anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, hypothyroidism, cardiac conduction abnormalities, pancreatitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category B: No controlled studies in pregnant women but no confirmed risk in the 1st trimester

- Monitoring of vitamin B12 levels during long-term therapy
