Indications

Pharmacology
- Rapid-acting nonbarbiturate general anesthetic
- Produces analgesic state
- Characterized by dissociative anesthesia
- Hypnotic effects
- Analgesic effects
- Amnesic effects
Dosage & Administration
- Onset of action within 30 seconds (IV)
- Surgical anesthesia within 5-10 minutes (IV)
- Intramuscular surgical anesthesia within 12-25 minutes
- Initial intravenous dose of 1-4.5mg/kg
- Maintenance doses may be repeated as needed
- Recommended slow administration over 60 seconds
- May be administered intramuscularly
Interaction
- Prolonged recovery with concurrent use of barbiturates/narcotics
- Clinically compatible with general and local anesthetic agents
Contraindications
- Significant elevation of blood pressure
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
Side Effects
- Elevated blood pressure and pulse rate
- Possible hypotension and bradycardia
- Potential respiratory depression or apnea
- Diplopia and nystagmus
- Enhanced skeletal muscle tone
- Possible anorexia, nausea, and vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended in pregnancy or lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Use by experienced physicians
- Active pharyngeal and laryngeal reflexes
- Avoid use alone in surgery of pharynx, larynx, or bronchial tree
- Avoid mechanical stimulation of pharynx
- Administer intravenous dose over 60 seconds
Overdose Effects
- Possible respiratory depression
- Supportive ventilation may be required
- Wide margin of safety
- Unintentional administration of overdoses have been followed by prolonged but complete recovery
