Indications

  • Short-term management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
  • Relieves pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
  • Decreases eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • Chemical name: 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid, compound with 2 - amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol (1:1)
  • Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
  • Metabolized in the liver

Pharmacology

  • Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system and prostaglandin synthesis
  • Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at its analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet recommended dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours
  • Injection recommended dose: Single or multiple doses for management of moderately severe, acute pain
  • Multiple dose treatment for patients <65 years and >65 years of age
  • Eye drops: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Other NSAIDs or aspirin: Increase side effects of Kepros
  • Anti-coagulants: Enhance anti-coagulant effect
  • Beta Blocker: Reduce the anti-hypertensive effect
  • ACE Inhibitors: Increase the risk of renal impairment
  • Methotrexate: Enhance the toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Not to be used in children under 16 years of age
  • Contraindicated as prophylactic analgesic before surgery

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients over 65 years
  • Caution in patients with active or suspected peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, and liver dysfunction
  • Discontinue use of topical NSAIDs in patients with corneal epithelial breakdown
  • Do not administer while wearing contact lenses
