Indications

  • Short-term management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
  • Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
  • Decrease eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Belongs to the pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
  • Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
  • Biological activity associated with the S-form
  • Highly protein bound
  • Metabolized in the liver
  • Products of metabolism and some unchanged drugs excreted in the urine

Pharmacology

  • Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system
  • Demonstrates minimal anti-inflammatory effect at its analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet: Recommended dose is 10 mg every 4-6 hours for short-term use
  • Injection: Administered single or multiple doses for the management of moderately severe, acute pain
  • Onset of analgesic effect within 30 minutes with maximum effect in 1 to 2 hours
  • Duration of analgesic effect is usually 4 to 6 hours

Interaction

  • With other NSAIDs or aspirin: Increases the side effects of Kerolac
  • With anti-coagulants: Enhances anti-coagulant effect
  • With Beta Blocker: Reduces the anti-hypertensive effect
  • With ACE Inhibitors: Increases the risk of renal impairment
  • With Methotrexate: Enhances the toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Children under 16 years of age
  • Prophylactic analgesic before surgery

  • In case of corneal epithelial breakdown, discontinue use of topical NSAIDs
