Indications

  • Short-term management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
  • Relieve pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
  • Decrease eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Pyrrolo-pyrrole group of NSAIDs
  • Chemical description: 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid
  • Prostaglandin synthesis inhibition
  • Liver metabolism
  • Highly protein bound
  • Excretion in urine

Mode of Action

  • Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme system
  • Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet: Recommended dose 10 mg every 4-6 hours, short-term use only (up to 7 days)
  • Injection: Single or multiple doses, IV bolus given over no less than 15 seconds, IM administration given slowly and deeply into the muscle
  • Eye Drops: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Increased side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
  • Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants
  • Reduced anti-hypertensive effect with beta blockers
  • Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE Inhibitors
  • Enhanced toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Children under 16 years of age
  • Prophylactic analgesic use before surgery

  • Discontinue use of topical NSAIDs with corneal epithelial breakdown
  • Avoid administration while wearing contact lenses
