Indications
- short-term management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
- relieves pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
- decreases eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies
Description
- belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- chemical name: 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid, compound with 2 - amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol (1:1)
- inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
- S-form is associated with the biological activity
- highly protein bound
- largely metabolized in liver
- metabolites and some unchanged drugs excreted in urine
Pharmacology
- potent analgesic
- inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme system
- minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- 10 mg tablet every 4-6 hours for up to 7 days
- Injection: single or multiple doses, regular or when necessary schedule
- IV bolus to be given over no less than 15 seconds
- analgesic effect begins within 30 minutes
- maximum effect in 1 to 2 hours after dosing IV or IM
- duration of analgesic effect usually 4 to 6 hours
- specific dosages for different age groups and conditions
Interaction
- Other NSAIDs or aspirin: Increase side effects of Kflam
- Anti-coagulants: Enhance anti-coagulant effect
- Beta Blocker: Reduce anti-hypertensive effect
- ACE Inhibitors: Increase risk of renal impairment
- Methotrexate: Enhance toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
- not to be used in children under 16 years of age
- contraindicated as prophylactic analgesic before surgery

Precautions & Warnings
- exercise caution in patients over 65 years
- caution in patients with active or suspected peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding
- caution in patients with asthma and liver dysfunction
- discontinue topical NSAIDs usage if evidence of corneal epithelial breakdown is found
- do not administer while wearing contact lenses
