Indications

  • Management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
  • Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
  • Decrease eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Belongs to the pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
  • Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
  • Biological activity associated with the S-form
  • Pharmacokinetic property is linear
  • Highly protein bound
  • Metabolized in liver
  • Products of metabolism and some unchanged drugs excreted in the urine

Pharmacology

  • Potent analgesic
  • Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme system
  • Shows minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet recommended dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours
  • Injection recommended dose: varies based on age, patient type, and purpose
  • Eye Drops recommended dose: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily
  • Caution for dosage exceeding recommended limits

Interaction

  • Increases side effects of Pair when combined with other NSAIDs or aspirin
  • Enhances anti-coagulant effect when used with anti-coagulants
  • Reduces anti-hypertensive effect when used with beta blockers
  • Increases risk of renal impairment when used with ACE Inhibitors
  • Enhances toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Use not recommended in children under 16 years of age
  • Contradicted as prophylactic analgesic before surgery
