Indications
- Short-term management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
- Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
- Decrease in eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies
Description
- Belongs to the pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Chemical name: 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid, compound with 2 - amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol (1:1)
- Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins as a peripherally acting analgesic
- Highly protein bound and largely metabolized in liver
Pharmacology
- Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme system and prostaglandin synthesis
- Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet recommended dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours for short-term use (up to 7 days), not for chronic use
- Injection may be used for single or multiple doses for the management of moderately severe, acute pain
- Recommended IV or IM dosages for different age groups and conditions
- Recommended dose for eye drops: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily
Interaction
- Other NSAIDs or aspirin increase side effects
- Anti-coagulants enhance anti-coagulant effect
- Beta Blocker reduces anti-hypertensive effect
- ACE Inhibitors increase risk of renal impairment
- Methotrexate enhances toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
- Children under 16 years of age
- Prophylactic analgesic before surgery

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients over 65 years of age
- Caution in patients with active or suspected peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, and liver dysfunction
- Patients with corneal epithelial breakdown should discontinue use of topical NSAIDs and closely monitor corneal health
- Avoid administration while wearing contact lenses for ophthalmic solution
