Description

Dosage Administration

    • Adults: 10-20 mg, every 6-8 hours daily
    • Children: 2-4 ml/10 kg body weight, every 6-8 hours daily
    • By Rectum: 30-60 mg every 4-8 hours

Pharmacological Action

Dopamine antagonist, gastroprokinetic action, gastrointestinal motility regulation, enhancing gastric emptying and peristalsis

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Neonates
  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhage, obstruction or perforation
  • Prolactin releasing pituitary tumor

Interaction

  • Anticholinergic drugs may antagonize effect
  • Antacids and antisecretory drugs lower oral bioavailability
  • Inhibition of CYP3A4 enzyme may increase plasma levels

Side Effects

  • Transient intestinal cramps
  • Rare extrapyramidal phenomena
  • Possible increase in plasma prolactin level
  • Rare allergic reactions such as rash and urticaria

Pregnancy & Lactation

Caution during first trimester, limited excretion in breast milk, not recommended for nursing mothers
