Indications

  • Short-term management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
  • Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
  • Decrease eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins as a peripherally acting analgesic
  • Highly protein bound and largely metabolized in the liver

Pharmacology

  • Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system and prostaglandin synthesis
  • Demonstrates minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet recommended dosage: 10 mg every 4-6 hours short-term only (up to 7 days)
  • Injection for postoperative pain: IV bolus given over no less than 15 seconds, IM injection given slowly and deeply into the muscle
  • Eye drops dosage: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Other NSAIDs or aspirin increase side effects
  • Anti-coagulants enhance anti-coagulant effect
  • Beta Blocker reduces anti-hypertensive effect
  • ACE Inhibitors increase risk of renal impairment
  • Methotrexate enhances toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Children under 16 years of age
  • Prophylactic analgesic before surgery

  • Eye drops precaution: Not to be administered while wearing contact lenses
