Indications

  • Short-term management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
  • Relieves pain after ocular surgery
  • Decreases eye inflammation caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
  • Chemical composition: 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid with 2-amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol
  • Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
  • Peripherally acting analgesic
  • Metabolized in the liver
  • Excretion in the urine

Pharmacology

  • Potent analgesic
  • Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system
  • Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended tablet dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours for short-term use
  • Injection for moderately severe, acute pain management
  • Different dosing recommendations for different age groups
  • Maximum daily dose limits for various patient categories
  • Eye drop usage: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Increased side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
  • Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants

  • Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE Inhibitors
  • Enhanced toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Not for use in children under 16 years
  • Contradicted as prophylactic analgesic before surgery
