Indications
- Short-term management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
- Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
- Decrease in eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies
Description
- Belongs to the pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
- Chemically known as 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid, compound with 2 - amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol (1:1)
- Inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins and may be considered as a peripherally acting analgesic
- Highly protein bound and largely metabolized in the liver, with excretion in urine
Pharmacology
- Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Acts by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzyme system and inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
- Demonstrates minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended tablet dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours for short-term use (up to 7 days)
- Injection may be used for moderately severe, acute pain that requires analgesia at the opioid level, usually in a postoperative setting
- Analgesic effect begins within 30 minutes with maximum effect in 1 to 2 hours after dosing
Interaction
- Other NSAIDs or aspirin increase the side effects of Todol
- Anti-coagulants enhance anti-coagulant effect
- Beta Blockers reduce the anti-hypertensive effect
- ACE Inhibitors increase the risk of renal impairment
- Methotrexate enhances the toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
- Use not recommended for children under 16 years of age
- Contraindicated as prophylactic analgesic before surgery

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients over 65 years of age
- Caution in patients with active or suspected peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, and liver dysfunction
- Discontinue use of topical NSAIDs and monitor for corneal health for patients with evidence of corneal epithelial breakdown
