Categories
- Anesthesia
- Muscle Relaxant
- Neuromuscular Blocking Agent
- Pharmacology
- Therapeutic Class
Description
- Suxonium is a short-acting depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used in anesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation, assist in mechanical ventilation, and aid a wide range of surgical and obstetric procedures. It acts by imitating the action of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, resulting in muscle relaxation. The dose is dependent on body weight, route of administration, and individual patient response. It is contraindicated in certain pathological states such as hyperkalemia and in patients with specific medical conditions. Storage condition requires refrigeration between 2°C-8°C.
Color Options
- Clear liquid in color
Dimensions
- 50mg/ml concentration
Functions
- Facilitates endotracheal intubation
- Aids in mechanical ventilation
- Assists in various surgical and obstetric procedures
- Acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocker
Materials
- Suxamethonium Chloride
Technical Specifications
- Act on muscle type nicotinic receptors
- Binds to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor
- Results in opening of the receptor's nicotinic sodium channel
- Exhibits a longer duration of effect than acetylcholine due to slower hydrolysis by butyrylcholinesterase
Design Elements
- Bolus Intravenous or Intramuscular injection administration
Usability Features
- Administered by or under the close supervision of an anesthetist
- Requires immediate facilities for endotracheal intubation with administration of oxygen by intermittent positive pressure ventilation
Dosage & Administration
- Administered by bolus Intravenous or Intramuscular injection
- Adult dose dependent on body weight for endotracheal intubation and maintenance of muscle relaxation during surgical procedures
- Children's dose proportional to body weight
- Total dose should not exceed 500 mg per hour for adults and 150 mg for children
Interaction
- Prolonged by certain drugs or chemicals that reduce normal plasma cholinesterase activity
Contraindications
- Not to be administered to a patient who is not fully anesthetized
- Contraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to the drug
- Contraindicated in patients with inherited atypical plasma cholinesterase activity
- Contraindicated in patients recovering from major trauma, severe burns, neurological deficits involving acute major muscle wasting, or pre-existing hyperkalemia
- Not to be used in the presence of open eye injuries and in newborn infants
Side Effects
- Cardiovascular effects like bradycardia, tachycardia, hypertension, hypotension, and arrhythmias
- Respiratory effects such as bronchospasm, prolonged respiratory depression, and apnea
- Musculoskeletal effects including muscle fasciculation, post-operative muscle pains, and myoglobinemia
- Other effects like hyperthermia, increased intra-ocular pressure, increased intra-gastric pressure, rash, and excessive salivation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not readily crosses the placental barrier and should not be administered to pregnant women unless the potential benefit outweighs possible hazards
Precautions & Warnings
- Should be administered only by or under the close supervision of an anesthetist familiar with its action and characteristics
- Elderly may be more susceptible to cardiac arrhythmias, especially if digitalis-like drugs are also being taken
Storage Conditions
- Refrigerator storage between 2°C-8°C
